Attractiepark Duinrell Review: Can It Fill An Entire Day?

For many visitors, Duinrell is known more for Tikibad than for the amusement park itself. Located in Wassenaar, Duinrell combines a family amusement park, holiday resort and one of the largest water parks in the Benelux. This combination has been at the heart of the destination for decades, but it also raises an interesting question. Is Duinrell a full-day theme park, or does Tikibad play a larger role in that experience than many visitors realize?
During our visit, we spend time in both the amusement park and Tikibad to find out.
First Impressions
Dating back to 1935, Duinrell is one of the oldest amusement parks in the Netherlands and has gradually evolved into a combination of theme park, holiday resort and water park. One thing that immediately stands out upon arrival is the layout of the destination. Unlike most amusement parks, the main attractions are not located directly behind the entrance. Instead, visitors first walk through a significant portion of the holiday park before reaching the rides themselves. While unusual, the route does help create the feeling that Duinrell is more than just a traditional amusement park.
Once inside the attraction area, the park presents itself well. Although Duinrell is not a heavily themed destination, it benefits greatly from its natural surroundings. Large numbers of trees and green spaces help create a pleasant atmosphere and provide a welcome contrast to some of the more concrete-heavy parks in the region.
The park itself leaves a positive impression. Between the trees, family attractions and relaxed atmosphere, Duinrell is simply a pleasant place to spend a few hours. However, as we continue our way through the park, we also begin to wonder whether the amusement park alone offers enough to justify a full day visit.
What Does Duinrell Offer?
When looking at Duinrell’s coaster collection, Falcon is the attraction that immediately stands out. The Gerstlauer Euro-Fighter delivers a compact but forceful ride experience and remains the park’s main draw for thrill seekers. Dragonfly, located nearby, offers a very different experience. While aimed primarily at families, the Gerstlauer Family Coaster remains a fun ride and provides a nice contrast to Falcon.
The recently opened Kikker8baan joins the park’s family lineup and replaces one of Duinrell’s most iconic attractions. Although the coaster is clearly aimed at younger visitors, it feels like a logical successor and is likely to be appreciated by the park’s target audience. Nearby, Duinrell Drifter offers another family attraction and helps round out this area of the park.
Elsewhere in the park, attractions such as Wild Wings and Duinrell Express provide additional reasons to explore beyond the coaster collection. Neither attraction is likely to be the sole reason for visiting the park, but both contribute positively to the overall experience.
At the same time, one pattern quickly emerges. While Duinrell offers a solid selection of attractions across different thrill levels, there are relatively few rides that encourage repeated visits throughout the day. As a result, it does not take particularly long to experience most of the park’s highlights, bringing us back to the question at the centre of this review.
What Makes Duinrell Different
By the early afternoon, our attention shifts towards Tikibad. Located alongside the amusement park, the water park has become one of Duinrell’s defining attractions and remains one of the largest indoor water parks in the Benelux.
Unlike many modern water parks, Tikibad does not follow a particularly strict theme. While certain areas share a similar appearance, the complex feels more focused on its attractions than on telling a specific story. This is especially noticeable when moving between the various slide towers and pools, though it never really detracts from the overall experience.
What immediately stands out is the sheer scale of the facility. With dozens of slides spread across both indoor and outdoor areas, there is considerably more to explore than first appears. Whether visitors are looking for high-speed body slides, family attractions or something in between, Tikibad offers a surprisingly broad selection.
Most importantly, the water park is simply fun. The atmosphere is relaxed; operations are efficient and there is enough variety to keep guests occupied for several hours. As we continue our visit, it becomes increasingly clear why Tikibad plays such an important role within the overall Duinrell experience.
The Tikislides
A major part of Tikibad’s appeal comes from its extensive slide collection. With dozens of slides spread throughout the complex, there is something for almost every type of visitor. From family-friendly attractions to high-speed body slides, the variety on offer is impressive and helps distinguish Tikibad from many other water parks in the region.
Among the highlights is Starfright, a slide that combines darkness, lighting effects and a surprising sense of speed. The attraction offers a different experience from most of the other slides in the complex and quickly becomes one of our favourites during the visit.
The well-known Turbo Slides are perhaps the most recognisable attractions in Tikibad. While they undoubtedly provide a unique experience and clearly remain popular with many guests, we find them slightly overrated compared to some of the park’s other offerings. Their popularity speaks for itself, and they continue to attract a steady stream of riders throughout the day.
Ultimately, the strength of Tikibad’s slide collection lies in its variety. Rather than relying on a single standout attraction, the water park offers enough different experiences to encourage guests to spend several hours exploring everything it has to offer.
So, Can Duinrell Fill An Entire Day?
Returning to the question at the centre of this review, we find it difficult to view Duinrell and Tikibad as two separate experiences. While the amusement park offers a pleasant atmosphere, a respectable coaster collection and several enjoyable attractions, it does not take particularly long to experience most of its highlights. The park simply lacks the number of highly re-rideable attractions needed to keep many visitors occupied for an entire day.
At the same time, Duinrell appears to have recognised this challenge. Rather than relying solely on the amusement park, the resort complements its attraction lineup with the largest water park in the Benelux. In doing so, it creates an experience that feels far more complete than either component would on its own.
Looking ahead, it feels as though Duinrell is only one major addition away from taking the next step as a theme park. The foundations are already there: a pleasant setting, a solid collection of family attractions and a well-rounded overall experience.
Until then, the combination of Duinrell and Tikibad remains the destination’s greatest strength. Together, they provide enough variety to comfortably fill a full day, making Duinrell a worthwhile destination for families and enthusiasts alike.
